guardian deity Kataragama deviyo and Hindu War God Murugan. It is one of the few
religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by the Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the
Vedda people. The shrine has for centuries attracted Tamil Hindus from Sri Lanka and South
India who undertook an arduous pilgrimage on foot. The cult of Kataragama deviyo has
become the most popular amongst the Sinhalese people. A number of legends and myths
are associated with the deity and the location, differing by religion, ethnic affiliation and
time

Sella Kataragama Temple is situated a few kilometers away from the main Kataragama city,
in the southern part of the island. It is one of the main attractions visited by many who come
for pilgrimage to Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya. It is believed that Hindu god Skanda
married Valli amma with the help of his brother Lord Ganesh, at this location. To this day,
newly married couples come to visit the temple of Valli Amma, to obtain blessings for the new
life. Sella Kataragama temple complex lies across the Menik River. The area consists of a
number of temples including Siva Kovil, Ganapathi Kovil, Kataragama Kovil, Lakshmi Kovil,
Valliamma Kovil, Saman Devalaya and Mahasen Viharaya, which is a temple dedicated to king
Mahasen.

Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist monastery located in Hambantota
District, South Eastern Sri Lanka. Situated 18 km east of the pilgrimage town Katharagama.
Sithulpawwa Vihara can be reached by travelling 18 miles along the Tissamaharama-
Yodhakandiya road towards the Yala National Park. The name Sithulpawwa is derived from
the word “Chiththala Pabbatha”, which means “the hill of the quiet mind”. This monastery
was a place of worship for devotees as well as a center of Buddhist education for Buddhist
monks. Paintings of the Anuradhapura era and the ruins of stone Buddha images,
Bodhisattva images, Image Houses, Circular Relic Houses are spread throughout the
monastery premises.

Kirinda Vihara Maha Devi Temple  A Buddhist sacred place was originally built in the 3rd
century BC by King “Kawantissa.” It has a massive, standing Buddha figure and a stupa.
Devotees traveling to Kataragama on pilgrimage frequently visit it.
The temple is situated at the summit of the mountain, which may be reached via the paved
staircase cut out of the rock. (Now cement staircase is there) The standing Buddha statue
can be reached by following the route on the side once you reach the top of the stairs.
The 360-degree view of the summit is eye-catching. Kirinda Beach fishing harbor and the
long view of the shore are stunning. If the surroundings are clear, you’ll be able to see two
lighthouses, namely the Great Basses Reef and the Little Basses Reef lighthouses.
According to historical mythology, Queen ‘Viharamahadevi’ was the temple’s patron saint.
Because of the flooding caused by the rising water level in ‘Kelaniya’ during that period,
the locals believed that God was punishing them for the king’s sin of ordering the murder
of a monk. Consequently, the monarch was asked to sacrifice Princess ‘Viharamahadevi’,
whom he had set ashore, in order to atone for his sins. Consequently, Princess
‘Viharamadevi’, the courageous young princess, had come ashore at a location known as
Doreva, Kirinda. She was welcomed into the region by King Kavantissa, who was in charge
of the Ruhunu kingdom at the time, and they later got married. In order to honor this
occasion, the king built the Kirinda temple.
